I love bentonite clay! I’ve been using it for over two years and have even posted DIY recipes using it. That’s why I thought it would be helpful to make a post on what bentonite clay is and its benefits.
What Is Bentonite Clay?
Bentonite clay is a special clay infused with volcanic ash. It can also be referred to as Montmorillonite clay. This clay can be found in many places around the world. In the U.S.A., the largest bentonite clay deposits are in Montana and Wyoming. For thousands of years, bentonite clay has been used to heal many ailments. Bentonite clay contains a lot of different minerals. A few are iron, sodium, copper, silica, magnesium, and calcium.
Benefits and Uses of Bentonite Clay
Bentonite clay is naturally very absorbent. This makes it great for removing toxins and germs. This makes bentonite clay a perfect candidate for health and beauty uses. A while ago, I made a post on a DIY armpit detox. This detox helps reverse the damage on the lymphatic system caused by traditional antiperspirants. Bentonite clay can also be used in DIY face masks as it’s ability to suck up bacteria helps fight acne. Add a few tablespoons of clay to your bath for a powerful detox bath.
If a bug decides to make a quick meal out of you, try making a paste out of bentonite clay and water. The paste will relieve the itch and help the bite heal faster. Another great use for bentonite clay is oral care. The natural minerals in the clay strengthen teeth. You can make toothpaste or a rinse.
Warnings
I have a couple of warnings when it comes to using bentonite clay. First, never allow bentonite clay to come into contact with anything metal. This will “deactivate” the clay making it less powerful. Only use glass or plastic when handling bentonite clay for DIYs. Second, there are different types of bentonite clay. Some can be okay for internal use and others should never be used internally. A little research on the brand you plan to purchase will help. I pictured the two brands used in my home. The Tierra Buena is good for internal uses like oral care or detoxes. This type of clay is normally more expensive. I use the Aztec Secret brand of clay for all external uses because it’s cheaper.
